February. Outside it’s frosty, inside it’s international.Adam has chosen a home brewery in Friedrichshain. A place where you’ll find English language and soccer on the screen. I don’t have any idea about all these different beers, named futuristically, but the pub suits our meeting and fits perfectly to his appearance - he is a likeable bundle of energy with lots of stories.

It was an hour filled with more than communication. So many fascinating ways to tell his anecdotes. Why in heaven’s name did a Canadian get out of his usual life, and despite his fear of flying go to Europe? With nothing more than some personal equipment and his tools. What for? Just a moment, first he takes a 5-week-detour through Eastern Europe. Then, In the middle of October he arrives in Berlin, not the best time when you like sunshine and daylight. But Adam unpacks his tools, goes out, makes new contacts and starts his business.

But not like in a showroom style, he is right in the middle of the crowd “I also offer personalized fittings and tailoring of harnesses at private parties, and events.”
We see a lot in Berlin, but this is something new. Now I have my questions and start my interview with the most frequently asked question!:

Where are you from?

I’m from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the very East Coast of Canada

How long have you been in Berlin?

Since October 2017

What did you study?

Social Work.

What are you doing today?

Being yet another broke artist in Berlin

What was your reason for moving to Berlin?

I crave the open-mindedness, sex and body positivity, the history, culture, art, the grit and grime, and the beer.

What is your business, what do you do?

“Handjob Handmade”. I offer handmade custom kink, bondage, bdsm, and fashion items made mostly from leather, or a vegan rubber alternative. My style emphasizes simplicity, function and the uniqueness of each piece. Everything is hand cut, sewn, dyed, and shaped, and made by me.

What do you like the most about your work?

I love the feeling of helping take a person’s design ideas and making them a reality. I love the joy it brings people when they’re wearing a creation I made especially for them or their partner(s).

What did you expect and did Berlin fulfil that expectation?

This is a difficult question to answer. In many ways Berlin has exceeded expectations, and in others I’ve found myself unfulfilled. I could easily write a few thousand words on this, but I won’t bore you with that.

Likes: The people are amazingly quirky, weird, unique, open-minded. The club culture blew my mind. Transit here is great. Beer here is glorious. I love the gritty aesthetic.

Dislikes: The bureaucracy. Employment situation. Housing issues. Grey skies.

What is the ugliest building in Berlin?

AFD headquarters?

What do you like the most about Berlin?

Poor but sexy

What do you appreciate in other people?

Genuineness

What would you change about yourself?

“…I wish I was a little bit taller
I wish I was a baller
I wish I had a girl who looked good, I would call her
I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
And a six four Impala”       (hey, recognize this? Lyrics by Skee-Lo)

Which skill would you like to have, that you don’t have now?

Speaking German

Is there any “human behavior” that you will never understand?

Hate, racism, sexism

If you would have 25 hours in a day, what will you do?

Sleep, eat, drink or party

If you could read your future in a book. Would you read it until ‘The End’?

Sure, why not.

What would like your last word to be?

Tschüssi
